About us
From NEET
...to SWEET
With the number of people classified as ‘NEET’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training) exceeding 1m in the UK, it would be easy to feel despondent and lose sight of the great work that is being done.Â
Support With Education, Employment & Training (SWEET) seeks to change this by showcasing and signposting the organisations that are working every day to help people overcome barriers that are often (thought not exclusively) rooted in poverty. By bringing them together in one place, the aim is to show people that help is available – and simplify the process of finding it.
The directory has been created by Toni Kent, based on her personal experience of upward social mobility which has been marred by a sense of injustice that the opportunities afforded to her were not extended to the rest of her community.Â
Having navigated childhood bereavement and complex family problems exacerbated by low income, Toni carved a corporate career in the tech industry before launching a ‘second act’ as a keynote speaker with a specialisation in social mobility.Â
Through this, she founded the Challenging University podcast which brought her into contact with incredible organisations working at the front line of helping people to overcome socio-economic adversity, break cycles and carve out a positive path.Â
This desire to amplify the efforts of those organisations became the seed of the idea for SWEET – offering optimism and access to support.
